"Just"

When did "Just" get added to the drive through vocabulary? Go and order a large drink from your favorite espresso drive through and the barista will shamelessly say “That’ll be JUST $8.20”. The barista will then stare blankly at you if you repeat “Just?” as they wonder if you’ll round up to an even $10 to include their tip. I know I date myself here but I remember when a Whopper was permanently $.99. It was built right into the sign. It must have been at an impressionable time in life because I still believe just about everything should relate to ninety-nine cents somehow. Steak? How about ninety-nine cents a pound? A gallon of gas? How about ninety-nine cents? A pack of JoLatte? Well, I can’t afford to sell it for ninety-nine cents but you thought that was where I was going right? The shipping alone is four or five bucks but by golly I’ll get my coffee fix for a heck of a lot cheaper than the drive through and I’ve got the wherewithal to not say “just”.
